Dressage Principles Illustrated

Dressage Principles BookCharles de Kunffy was born in Hungary and raised in the Classical tradition of training and riding, the tradition of the Spanish Riding School of Budapest (which ended with WW II) and the Spanish Riding School of Vienna (which continues to this day).

This beautifully illustrated book begins: “Thousands of years ago, man tamed the horse, and as a result, we experience thrills and pleasures that few advances in technology have been have to duplicate.... However, and perhaps unexpectedly, the horse repaid man’s efforts to tame and teach him by both elevating the character, and strengthening the virtue of those who came into contact with him. The tamer of the horse became the pupil; his rider, elevated well above ground by him, was raised in spirit and character also... Respectful of the horse’s ability to elevate the virtuous above the common, we must always remain humbled by our privileged position as a rider.”

In this lovely, thought-provoking work on the art of dressage, readers will recognize author Charles de Kunffy’s uncompromising devotion to the horse and the art involved in the art of riding. He insists that a seamless partnership between horse and rider is the most important goal in riding (rather than accolades in competition). He explains the rationale for training the horse and the methodology for doing so correctly, placing great emphasis on the importance of suppleness and collection, which lead to athletic development. Mr. de Kunffy also writes eloquently about what it means to be an equestrian and about the roles of teachers and mentors in a rider’s education.
